Sparta

Sparten Government

Sparta was ruled by two kings, these two kings lead their armies in times of war. However, these two kings were not the only ones running the armies, in addition to the kings there were five magistrates that were elected from aristocratic families. There was also a council that created all of Sparta's laws, two kings and twenty-eight elders were included in this council. The elders had to be sixty years of age or older to qualify for the position. These leaders took the laws that were made and had an assembly made up of citizens make a up-or-down vote on the laws without discussion or alterations. However, the only way to become a citizen was to be a discendent of the original Doric invaders who settled the city. This caused the total amount of citizens to not exceed six or seven thousand at any time, the non-citizens out numbered the citizens. These non-citizens were kept under control by the strong miltary that the Sparten government had created.
